uk roadtrip part 7: isle of skye

Isle of Skye. It really is every bit as beautiful as they say. The combination of soft green hills and dramatic waterfalls and the wild sea next to it isn't something I've ever seen before. And I enjoyed every moment.

We only had one full day on Skye this time (but I will be coming back for sure), and I had a pretty mean bout of PMDS, so I spent the morning being sad in bed. But I felt better after lunch, and then we went for a drive in the rain to see some pretty things. And pretty things we saw!

We started at the viewpoint at Lealt Falls.

It was so incredibly windy that all we could do was laugh about it. :)

And take selfies of course!

The we walked down to the actual falls.

There's a sort of balcony just over the falls where you can stand and look down. I promised myself I wouldn't drop my camera, and I didn't. :)

The view was beautiful in less dramatic directions too.

Then we drove on to Kilt Rock. This was actually a perfect drive for this rainy and windy day, because the various carparks were really close to all the places we saw. I would have wanted to go for a long walk, of course, but we just didn't have weather for it. I stood staring at this waterfall for a long time, though. The wind played an almost perfect major triad through holes in the fence, which was beautiful, almost magical. The sounds and the views together were a breathtaking experience.

Let's have a closeup too.

Next stop: Staffin Beach.

I looked for the famous dinosaur paw prints in this rock, but I didn't find them.

And then we went to Quirang - or to the Quirang carpark, more like, so I could have a look around. At some point I will come back here and to the actual hike, but like I said, today wasn't the day for it.

At times I felt like the wind would actually take me away with it.

But the views from the viewpoint by the carpark were not shit either.

All this mist, all these soft greens! What a magical place.

On the way back to Portree we drove past Fairy Glen, but at that point we were tired and needed some rest, so we didn't stay long. We had evening plans after all!

We went to a cèilidh!!! It's thanks to Katy, really. When we were at her and Nick's a few days earlier, we got to talking about their wedding two years ago and how a cèilidh really is the most joyful thing in the world. I lamented that I don't know any more Scottish people getting married soon, so how will I ever get myself to a cèilidh again? And Katy said "you can just go to one?". I had no idea! I thought they were all for private parties and the like, I didn't know there were just random cèilidhs every now and then all over Scotland, that you can book a ticket to!

So I looked it up and ... there was a cèilidh. In Portree, where we were staying, on the exact day that we were there. LIFE THOUGH!

It was an absolutely magical night for me. There were children and teenagers performing highland dances in kilts and plaids and everything! The live band was incredible! The organiser who emceed the evening spoke mainly in Gaelic (what a beautiful language) (and only translated the most important bits into English)! There was a singer singing Gaelic ballads, and most of the room knew the lyrics and joined him in the choruses!

And I got to DANCE. They didn't have a caller, so you were expected to know the dances. Luckily, Liam and I are reasonably quick at picking things up so we could join quite a few of the dances. I was on such a dance high after that that I could barely sleep. What a night. What an experience.
